How to Properly Open a Bag of Chips

For years, I thought opening a bag of chips was one of those things that didn't really require instructions.

Grab the bag.

Tear it open.

Eat the chips.

Done.

Except… what if I told you there is actually a better way to open a bag of chips?

And no, I'm not talking about using scissors.

I'm talking about the little trick that can turn a crinkly bag of potato chips, tortilla chips, cheese puffs, or snack mix into a surprisingly useful serving bowl.

Once you see it, you'll probably wonder why nobody showed you this years ago.

Why the Way You Open a Chip Bag Matters

Most of us instinctively tear a chip bag from the top.

That's perfectly fine if you're standing in the kitchen and planning to eat directly from the package.

But there's one problem.

As soon as you tear the top off, you have a deep bag with chips sitting at the bottom.

You reach in.

Your hand disappears.

You pull out a handful.

Then another.

Then another.

And eventually you're digging around in the bottom like you're searching for loose change.

There's a much easier way.

The Trick: Open the Bag From the Front

Instead of tearing straight across the top, try opening the bag from the front side.

The goal is to create a wide opening so the chips are easier to see and reach.

Here's how.

Step 1: Put the Bag on a Flat Surface

Set the unopened chip bag on a table or countertop.

Give it a little shake first so the chips settle toward the bottom.

This makes the next step easier.

Step 2: Find the Center of the Front

Look at the front of the package — the side with the logo and flavor information.

Pinch the bag around the middle.

You don't need to make a giant opening.

Just create enough space to get started.

Step 3: Tear Across the Front

Carefully tear the package horizontally across the front.

Instead of removing the entire top of the bag, you're creating a larger opening toward the middle.

Go slowly.

Chip bags can rip farther than you expect once the tear gets started!

Step 4: Fold the Edges Down

Now comes the satisfying part.

Fold the loose edges of the bag outward and downward.

As you fold the package, the bottom portion of the bag becomes more like a little snack bowl.

And suddenly, you can actually see your chips.

No more reaching blindly into the bottom.

No more pulling out three chips while accidentally crushing the rest.

No more tipping the entire bag sideways trying to get those last few pieces.

Why This Works So Well

The trick is really about changing the shape of the package.

A traditional chip bag is tall and narrow.

That's great for packaging and storage, but not particularly convenient for serving.

By opening the front and folding the sides down, you turn that tall package into a wider container.

The chips spread out.

They're easier to grab.

And if you're serving snacks during a movie, game night, picnic, or casual get-together, the bag can function almost like a disposable serving bowl.

Pretty clever for something you were probably about to rip open anyway!

The Best Part? You Don't Need Anything Extra

That's what makes this trick so appealing.

You don't need:

  • A bowl
  • Scissors
  • A serving spoon
  • A special kitchen gadget
  • Extra dishes

You just need the chip bag.

And your hands.

That's it.

It's one of those tiny everyday tricks that seems almost too simple once you've seen it.

When Should You Try This?

This method is especially handy when you're sharing snacks.

Movie Night

Instead of passing around a tall bag that everyone has to reach into, open it wide and set it between everyone.

Much easier.

Parties

If you're putting out several snack options, the opened bags can work as casual serving containers.

Picnics

Less stuff to carry means less stuff to clean up afterward.

Game Day

Nobody wants to take their eyes off the game while wrestling with a stubborn chip bag.

Open it wide, put it down, and let everyone grab what they want.

What If the Bag Is Really Full?

That's where you want to be a little careful.

A completely full bag doesn't leave much room for folding.

Instead, gently settle the chips downward before opening it.

And don't squeeze the package too hard.

We all know what happens when you accidentally turn a bag of chips into a pressure vessel.

Crunch.

And suddenly your snack is dust.
