If moving the filler to the opposite side would require significant changes to the body structure, fuel plumbing, or production process, the manufacturer may choose the arrangement that works best with the existing architecture.

For vehicles produced on shared platforms, engineers may also make packaging decisions that accommodate several configurations.

Safety Is Part of the Design

Fuel is obviously flammable, so the fuel system must be engineered carefully.

Why the Fuel Door Isn't Always on the Same Side as the Driver

This is one of the reasons people sometimes find the arrangement confusing.

There's no universal requirement that the fuel filler must be next to the driver.

In fact, placing it on the passenger side can have an advantage in certain situations: if you're forced to stop on the side of a road to refuel, the filler could be farther away from passing traffic.

Fuel stations are designed to accommodate vehicles approaching pumps from either side, and drivers should position their vehicle so that the filler reaches the pump without stretching or improperly positioning the nozzle.

The most important thing is simply to know where your fuel door is before you pull into a crowded station.

A Small Design Choice With a Bigger Explanation

The next time you see one car with a fuel door on the left and another with it on the right, it isn't necessarily the result of an arbitrary decision.

Behind that little flap is a carefully designed system involving the fuel tank, filler neck, body structure, exhaust, suspension, crash protection, emissions equipment, and manufacturing requirements.
