Heat the oven before using.
Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Get the potatoes ready:
Peel the potatoes and cut them into thin slices, about 1/8-inch thick. A mandolin can help you cut even slices.
Prepare the cheese sauce:
In a pot, melt the butter on medium heat.
Put the chopped garlic in the pan and cook until it smells good, for about 1 minute.
Add the thick cream and milk, mix well.
Heat the mixture until it gently boils, then put in the shredded cheddar and parmesan cheese. Keep stirring until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.
Sprinkle some nutmeg, salt, and pepper according to your preference.
Put together the dish:
Apply butter or nonstick spray to a big baking dish.
Place half of the potato slices on the bottom of the dish, slightly overlapping them.
Put half of the cheese sauce on the potatoes, making sure it covers them evenly.
Place the rest of the potato slices on top, and then pour the rest of the cheese sauce over them.
Cook the potatoes in the oven.
Put aluminum foil on the baking dish and bake in the oven that has been preheated for 30 minutes.
Take off the cover and bake for another 25 to 30 minutes until the potatoes are soft and the tops are golden brown and bubbly.
Add decoration and serve.
Allow the sliced potatoes to cool down for a few minutes before you serve them.
Add some fresh thyme leaves on top.
Advice:
Different types of cheese can be combined to create a more flavorful dish. For example, you can mix Gruyere, Swiss, or Fontina cheeses.
To enhance the flavor, you can add caramelized onions or cooked bacon between the potato layers.
To avoid browning: If the top of the dish starts to brown too fast, you can lightly cover it with aluminum foil for the rest of the cooking time.
Enjoy your delicious creamy sliced potatoes, a dish that will surely make your family and friends happy!
