The crew members' remains were found among the spacecraft's debris after the 1986 Challenger space shuttle accident. Among the wreckage that was retrieved from the ocean bottom were the bodies of the seven astronauts: Judith Resnik, Gregory Jarvis, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Michael J. Smith, and Christa McAuliffe.
The bodies were sent to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware after recovery attempts, where they were examined and identified. Following identification, the remains were delivered to the family for either cremation or a private funeral.
